AVG Anti-Virus Free

An excellent program that's perfect for guarding your computer
against viruses and other harmful files that can be acquired from
floppy disks or via the Internet. AVG is very complete for a
freeware program and additionally to the "Resident Shield", which
offers real-time virus protection, AVG also provides an e-mail
mailbox scanner and a task/update scheduler.
> Notice: AVG Anti-Virus Free (version 7.1) will be discontinued on
15 Jan 2007. To maintain adequate protection, users of this version
should upgrade to the new free package (version 7.5), which will
continue to be supported unlike its predecessor.
avast! 4 Home Edition

A freeware anti-virus program for non-commercial (home) use. avast!
4 Home Edition keeps a look out for viruses, worms and trojans that
could damage your computer, then takes the appropriate removal
action if a virus is found. The program features a simple user
interface, an MS Outlook plug-in and a file-system shield, plus lots
more besides.
Free Norton SystemWorks 2006
Register here and follow the prompts to
receive a free version of Norton SystemWorks 2006, a popular
utilities suite, which includes an anti-virus program and various
other utilities. Using this, you can optimize your PC's performance,
fix and prevent problems, recover from system failures and also keep
dial-up connections active. (U.S. Only)
AntiVir Personal Edition
The personal edition of AntiVir is one of the best free antivirus
programs we've seen and offers effective protection against almost
all computer viruses on the stand alone PC. This version detects
over 50,000 different types of virus (macro, etc.), and can
scan/repair macro viruses fast. AntiVir is made in Germany and is
freely available to people using it non-commercially.
VCatch Basic
A free antivirus tool for Windows-based operating systems. VCatch is
aimed at those people who use popular Internet programs (such as
ICQ), Web based e-mail services or visit other places where "dodgy"
files are extremely common. The program is very good at detecting
viruses and will even guard your e-mail in conjunction with your
favourite e-mail client, e.g. Thunderbird.
BitDefender Free Edition
Follow the link "Products" then "Free Products" to download
BitDefender Free Edition. The program is an intelligent anti-virus
tool, providing lots of useful features, such as entire system
scanning, the ability to isolate dubious files in "quarantine", live
updates to keep your system secure, a task scheduler and an
interface that can be "skinned".
AVDisk
The Anti-Virus Disk Program is a handy application that will create
a disk for cleaning your boot sector, scanning files and
disinfecting your computer. Features of AVDisk also include
automatic RAM drive mounting and software decompression, adjustable
keyboard layouts for several countries, basic usage help files and
the ability to span the software across many other disks.
AntiDote
One of the more effective free antivirus programs that doesn't need
a system installation. The current version supports a 20,000+
database of viruses and includes special list checkers. The
programmer's site features a mailing list where you can discuss new
developments or bring forward problems/improvements to the program.
The virus pattern is updated regularly and free to update.
Mail Cleaner
With so many "super viruses" going around, it isn't surprising that
people are often reluctant to open e-mail attachments. Mail Cleaner
stops the worry and will clean out any dodgy files it finds before
you read the message, meaning you can download with confidence. The
current version of Mail Cleaner supports the popular e-mail
application Incredimail. The program is advert supported.
Symantec's Kill CIH Program
The Chernobyl virus is arguably the most common and destructive
virus. This freeware program written by programmers at Symantec will
scan and then clean all known variants of the CIH virus from Windows
95 and 98 memory. More information regarding the setup and functions

Free Chat
Software
ICQ
ICQ is a popular and legendry 4MB application that
allows you to chat in real-time with other ICQ users
and post instant text messages to them. Once
registered, you'll receive a personal ID number that
you can give to your friends, family and other ICQ
buddies. Users can also send and receive files, play
games and use the ICQ network to find relatives and
friends.
BitWise
A free instant
messenger program that will encrypt your chat conversations,
making them far more private and secure. BitWise,
unlike some other instant messengers, supports
offline messaging and functions on Microsoft
Windows, Linux and also MacOS X. It even supports
file sharing, voice chat, file encryption and
features various availability modes, such as
"invisible".
Gaim
An open-source instant messaging client, which
allows you to simultaneously chat with users of the
following networks and programs: AIM, ICQ, MSN
Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC,
GroupWise Messenger and Zephyr. Gaim is compatible
with Microsoft Windows, Linux, BSD and MacOS X. The
program can be customised to your preferences.
Trillian
If you've ever had numerous messaging programs
installed on your computer at once it can be
extremely irritating when switching from one to
another. Trillian solves this slight problem by
providing a clever integrated program that can
communicate directly with AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN
and ICQ. The latest version has many features, which
can be seen at the developer's site.
Yahoo! Messenger
Yahoo!'s instant messaging application is one of the
most widely used programs of its kind and allows you
to chat in real-time with users of the same program.
Yahoo! Messenger has many features, most notably
voice chat mode the ability to see when you're
contacts are online. You can also host private or
public conferences and do much more besides.
Odigo
Odigo's instant messenger loads up dynamic buddy
lists from ICQ, MSN, Yahoo! and AIM, then allows you
to communicate with users of each program. We've
found Odigo to be somewhat reliable and we
particularly like the wide range of features it has:
voice chat, multi-user conferencing, message
archives, offline modes, content channels, people
finder directory and popular pages.
PalTalk
PalTalk is a voice/text chat program that
lets you call anyone in the world with excellent
sound quality. You define a personal list of online
connections and it will even tell you which of your
friends are online at any given time (similar to ICQ
and other messenger services). PalTalk also allows
users to talk using a sound card and microphone just
as if they were on the telephone.
AOL Instant Messenger
This was the Internet's first major instant
messaging service. Now everyone online can access
it, not just AOL subscribers. Using AIM, you can
send and receive files, messages and even chat in
real-time. Features in the current version include
the ability to play games online, receive text
messages, share photos and host live conversations
via voice chat.
Online Call
A fantastic program that can be used to communicate
via the Internet and talk to friends and family. It
works in a similar way to many instant messaging
programs and notifies you when a "buddy" comes
online. There are many options available if you use
Online Call, some of which include: video
conferencing, voice e-mail, private text chat,
group/conference chat, etc.
mIRC
Here's a super popular client that utilises IRC
(Internet Relay Chat) and allows users of the
service to communicate in real-time with people from
all over the globe. Using mIRC, you can exchange
text messages in an instant whilst being connected
over a chat network. There are hundreds of useful
features, more of which are explained in great
detail at the official mIRC Web site.
Moove
Experience chat in a 3D house-environment when you
download this great chat client called "moove".
Basically, it follows the rule of traditional IRC
but offers graphical images of people mimicking what
you state in text. For example, if you specify to
shake hands with your chat buddy, the virtual
character will do the same on the screen. Note: may
possibly require fast connections.
MSN Messenger
The freeware messenger program from Microsoft
Network has many functions in a small application.
You can voice chat to anyone in the world (provided
they have a copy of the program), share files, send
pictures and have a text chats. If you use
emoticons, MSN Messenger will automatically insert
pictures to represent these. Note: includes a free
USA dialing service.
MyJabber
MyJabber is your gateway to the world of dependable,
easy-to-use instant messaging and group
conferencing. Being lightweight, configurable and
very user friendly, MyJabber has quickly become a
program of choice for users of AIM, Yahoo! and MSN
Messenger. Additionally, MyJabber hosts its own
private user chat rooms. The program is also fully
customisable with sounds, etc.
